It’s not often that I have pie and mash during the week. But this week I had it twice - once on the Wednesday and again on the Thursday. I happened to be in London and had visited Westminster Abbey. I ended up in Camden Town outside Castle’s, queuing for pie and mash.

They had been very busy before I arrived. They’d run out of pies. There was a 20-minute wait, and after I sat down, the queue started again. So they were rushing and hurrying when the pies came out of the oven.

The pies were not sealed like in other shops, but this is a characteristic of Castle’s from what I can see in other people’s pictures. This means the pies have a tendency to leak. The pie filling was a bit liquidy and one of my pies was underfilled. And so unfortunately for this visit, I have to remove a point. It pains me to do so.

But let’s get to the positives. Despite being in an expensive part of London, this place is cheap. You can get a single pie for £5.75 and a double pie for £9.50, which is good value for money. The pies were delicious and the serving of mash was big enough. They’ve been doing this since 1934 and they are one of the veterans.

Please do give it a visit. It’s a traditional pie and mash shop, and it’s one of the oldest. I suspect on most days it’s a 10.
