Konch's Kafe

It’s unusual for me to have pie and mash during the week. I was in Brentwood on other business. I’d broken my bass guitar the week before and I’d found a luthier there. After a discussion about tensions of guitar necks, I headed into town for some food.

Konch’s Kafe is in a side road next to St Thomas’s Church. It advertises itself as a pie and mash shop, but it also does breakfasts and other meals. The staff welcomed me into the shop and I ordered my usual double double. They were very friendly and I asked them about the pies.

The pies are not made onsite. They are from Robins. We all know by now that Robins is one of my favourite pie and mash shops, so I was expecting good quality. Unfortunately I have to remove a point for authenticity from Konch’s score. That’s the rules.

The food was piping hot and the pies were what I expected, except that they were a bit soggy. Perhaps they’d been heated in a microwave. I’m going to take a point off for that, which is a shame because otherwise everything was good. It was still delicious. The serving of mash was big enough to keep me full. All the usual condiments were available.

The prices were very reasonable indeed - £9 for a double double and £6 for a single. This makes Konch’s one of the cheapest places to get double pie and mash, despite them having the cost of sourcing the pies elsewhere.

Given the service and price, I would definitely go back. The pie and mash is good, but next time I will go for breakfast. It gets 8/10, but could easily be a 9.
