Brook
Date of visit: 4th July 2026
Score: 10/10
We started Saturday with a session at the gym. What better way to follow that than pie and mash. We drove to Dagenham and managed to park nearby Brook, which is not far from Dagenham East tube station.

We arrived at opening time, eager to get the spoon and fork into action. I ordered my usual double-double with a cup of tea and my partner ordered her eels. I’m reliably informed that the eels were good, apparently better than the ones in Robins (Basildon).
I’m struggling a bit to score the shops. I don’t like to give negative reviews, particularly when the shop is a friendly family business. Pie and mash is not a difficult dish to cook. Even I’ve had a go in the past. I used a pie machine and only one type of pastry, but they turned out fine.
For this visit, I nearly scored a 9 and for a simple reason. I thought that the first pie I had was a bit soggy underneath. But it had been under the liquor for a bit longer. And as I tackled the plate, I enjoyed every bite of the well-filled pies.
The liquor was perhaps milder in flavour than other shops, but the whole plate was tasty. And the serving of mash was huge. At £9.20 for the double-double and £1.50 for the tea, the meal was good value for money. The staff were friendly and welcomed our custom.
I find myself giving you another review with 10/10, ladies and gentlemen. Just to justify it further:
- Authenticity, they make the pies on-site. 1 point.
- Cost - the prices are reasonable. 1 point.
- Presentation - the pies look good. 2 points.
- Serving size - the pies are big enough and there is enough mash. 2 points.
- Taste - everything tasted great and didn’t touch the sides on the way down. 3 points.
- Condiments available - vinegar and chilli vinegar were available, and the chilli vinegar had enough of a kick. 1 point.
