Robins

I’ve been careful not to dive in and review all the Robins pie and mash shops in one go. But one week after I posted about the Robins in Chelmsford, I found myself in the Robins in Basildon. I think you know how the review will go.

A pie and mash shop is a great place for me to get my carbs on cheat day. And they sell eels, which my partner likes. We can go to the gym on a Saturday morning and follow it with pie, mash and eels. This time, we drove to Basildon, not far from where I live.

The shop is on the main town square. On arrival I ordered my usual double-double with a cup of tea. This Robins is more expensive than the others and it set me back £13 with the tea. This is still good value for money. Maybe they have higher costs in Basildon.

What do I have to add on top of other Robins visits? They scrape the mash onto the plate. The pies are authentic. They are full of flavour, as is the liquor. And on our visit, the food was delicious, as you would expect at a Robins. I could not fault it, so it gets a 10 like its siblings.

As I write this, there are murmurs in the national press that the Chelmsford shop is shutting. According to the Gazette, a Robins company is under liquidation at the moment. Robins have released a video to say all is well and that the shops remain open. Long may they continue.
