Eastenders

Eastenders is on the edge of the Crisp Street market area. I intended to revisit it a couple of weeks ago when I was at Maureen’s. But I ended up in Whitechapel instead and subsequently at S. R. Kelly and Sons.

I’ve been to Eastenders many times and it is one of my favourites. The pies are very tasty. The beef in the pies is finely minced which reminds me of mince made from leftover roast beef. The seasoning lifts the pies up and I always enjoy them.

Obviously, they have a healthy rivalry with Maureen’s round the corner. My visit this morning confirmed my thoughts. They are both great, but Eastenders is marginally better. I should note that I arrived at Eastenders this morning starving hungry. I’d been to the gym and I was also up at 5 this morning. So, the P&M didn’t touch the sides on the way down. I ordered an apple crumble with custard as well.

A double-double costs £11 and with a cup of tea £12.50. This is higher than other places, but not too expensive. All credit cards are taken.

Eastenders is not a newcomer to the P&M market but they aren’t the oldest either. They opened in 1976 and have served the same recipe. The meat comes from the Smithfield meat market. The eels come from Billingsgate fish market. The pies are cooked onsite and are authentic. They also serve other flavours of pie (Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie, Vegetable Pie and a Quorn Pie).

I did my usual ritual of turning the pie over and adding chilli vinegar to one. The usual condiments were available. The vinegar was not too hot, just enough to add some heat.

The mash is delicious and creamy, despite being made without cream or butter. The pies are large enough and are filled with meat. The pies looked good. Today I got some slightly burnt ones. Some people insist on them. They were great.

I’m pleased to say this is another 10 out of 10. Eastenders and Robins are currently my favourite shops.
