Maureen’s is in the Crisp Street market area in the east end of London. It’s equidistant from Langdon Park and All Saints DLR stations. As I’ve written before on this blog, I missed out on the P&M experience when I studied nearby in Mile End. So this one has been on my list to explore.
I usually go to Eastenders around the corner and it is one of my favourites. In fact, I had intended to go there after eating in Maureen’s, but I was too full. Anyway, the two P&M shops are excellent – two of the best. I could not tell you which I prefer.
I met a friend at Maureen’s at opening time 10am on Saturday last week. The pies were ready soon after and we sat down to a strong cup of tea. The staff were very friendly. This time I ordered double pie and one mash because my intention was to have more later on. (As it happens I did, just not at Eastenders.)
A double, double with tea would have cost £10.80 – very reasonable indeed. They take credit cards over £4 but prefer cash.

Maureen’s opened over 60 years ago and is a family-run business. It serves P&M, eels and salt beef. I must go back to try the salt beef another time. You can eat in or order a delivery.
They make the pies on the premises and they are delicious. They’re generously sized too. Opening up and adding chilli vinegar just adds to the experience. The chilli vinegar was nice and not too hot.
The food was presented well and the green of the liquor stood out. The liquor is strong in this shop and the parsley punches through. So the food wins on all categories and I’m pleased to say this is another 10 out of 10.
Unfortunately my second P&M shop was not as good, but you’ll have to wait in suspense until next time.
