Calorific Considerations
I’m much more conscious of calories these days. Previously, I was on a low carb diet where I didn’t do any calorie counting. Now I’ve reintroduced some carbs on gym days and I count the calories. On an ideal day, I keep them below 2000.
I take Saturdays off from dieting but for the next few months I need to pay a bit more attention to my cheat day. Of course, pie and mash is one of the things I have on Saturday. Arments provide a delivery service across the UK for pies, as do many shops. Arments also publish nutritional information about their pies. These are good estimates of the calories in pie and mash for most shops. Obviously, it won’t be precise, but guidelines are usually enough. Here is the information compiled from their site:
| Item | Typical Weight | Calories | Protein | Carbs | Sugars | Fibre | Salt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steak Pie | 160g | 377.6 | 16.16g | 32g | 1.44g | 3.52g | 2.032g |
| Liquor | 200g | 60 | 2.4g | 12.6g | 0.2g | 1g | 1.8g |
| Mash | 200g | 167.2 | 3.6g | 36.8g | 0.2g | 2.8g | 0.52g |
which means roughly speaking:
| Item | Calories | Protein | Carbs | Sugars | Fibre | Salt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single single | 604.8 | 22.16g | 81.4g | 1.84g | 7.32g | 4.352g |
| Double double | 1209.6 | 44.32g | 162.8g | 3.68g | 14.64g | 8.704g |
I will be switching to a single single, or maybe double pie and single mash going forward.
