I was home alone on the 25th and wanted Pie and Mash, but didn’t know where to go. The Noted Eel and Pie House has been on my list since I started this blog. I did go once before, but the owners were on holiday and the shop was shut. I also wanted to get out on my bike and I was looking for a pie and mash shop on the route. Despite living in Wanstead for years and knowing the surrounding area well, I hadn’t realised how close Leytonstone is to West Ham. So I got on my bike after the gym, went to West Ham by train and then cycled to the pie house.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m finding it difficult to give bad scores in my reviews. The quality of pie and mash is generally quite high. To date, authenticity is the metric that normally lowers the score. If you know the Noted Eel and Pie House, it won’t surprise you that this is a straight 10 from the moment you walk through the door. Everything is made freshly on the premises and they butcher and mince the beef themselves.

The shop has been open since 1976 when they moved to Leytonstone from Bow. The 5th generation family business has been going since 1926 and they are still using the same recipe. The family have been providing the full pie and mash experience for a hundred years. The original founder was an eel man from the Netherlands (read more here). He changed the name of the shop during the second world war to Noted Eel and Pie House because his Dutch name was often mistaken for German.

But what about the pies I hear you ask? Well I ordered the usual post-gym double double with a cup of tea. A double double will set you back £9.20, making this one of the cheapest pie houses. The pies were well-filled and were delicious. The meat had a good bite to it. The chilli vinegar had a kick and the liquor was thick. The portions were generous.

I will be going back to this splendid establishment in the future. They also deliver pies nationwide, so I may try a home order too. They are active on social media and post regular updates. Long may they continue. Here’s to another hundred years.
