Pie and Mash

We had a little break in Poole to get the best of the summer sun. And what better way to start Saturday than pie and mash. We were going on a ferry trip late morning, so decided to pop into Champs near Poole Quay before.

Champs is a little pie and mash shop on the Grand Parade at the end of the high street. It serves everything you would expect: pies, mash, eels and cake. We arrived just before opening time and clocked the delivery outside from Manze. They order their pies from Manze in London, but make all the sides on site.

I had a double pie and double mash with a tea and my girlfriend had eels in liquor. The food took a little while to come, but we’d arrived a bit early and they were setting up.

Into the pie then. There’s nothing wrong with Manze’s pies, and the taste was all there as expected. Unfortunately my pie had the signs that it was reheated. The pastry was a bit drier on top than usual. That said, once the liquor was spread over them, they were just as delicious. Also, the pie was well filled.

The serving of mash was huge. There was no danger of hunger. All this came with a nice strong cup of tea. The pie and mash cost £11.50, which is above London prices but I suspect they have the overheads of a shop in Poole. But all was reasonable and the food didn’t touch the sides on the way down.

To summarise, definitely worth a visit when you are in Poole, but the pies are not made on site. I’m knocking one off for presentation of the pie due to the pastry and one off for authenticity. I suspect on another day it would get a 9.
