Perhaps I’m suffering from the curse of the reviewer. It’s been easy to score 10 at every pie and mash establishment. With a bit of experience, it’s difficult to get pie and mash wrong.
Heath is between Dagenham and Chadwell Heath on a corner among the cafes. There’s parking outside. It’s small inside, but gets regular custom. It’s open late until 2100, which is unusual for a pie and mash shop. I sat in the “best seat of the house” and watched the world go by whilst eating a double-double.
The double-double cost £10 and a cup of tea cost £1. The double serving of mash was big and the pies were well-sized. As usual, I flipped one pie over and added chilli vinegar. The vinegar had a kick to it – very pleasant indeed. Perhaps the bottom of one of my pies was slightly soggy, but there was a good bite on the pastry top. I enjoyed every bite.
It was hot on Saturday, but I still managed to wolf down the food. I’d just been to the gym to train and it was much needed.
You can get eels and seafood too. They will serve sausage and mash as well. For dessert, apple and cherry pies are available.
The staff are very friendly as are the other customers. This one is highly recommended, so if you are passing by Dagenham, be sure to pop in.
