Unusually, I had my cheat day on a Sunday. I’d swapped it from Saturday so that I could max out at a BBQ in the evening. But I needed something to start the day with, to lay foundations in fact. Bear in mind that for six days before I’d been on a 2000 calorie a day diet. And on this cheat day, anything was allowed. What better a place than the Ickenham Cafe?

I should disclose that I’ve been to the Ickenham Cafe at least 3 times before this visit. I’ve enjoyed it every time. I felt it was time to come back and properly review the food. It gets top marks. Remember that a 3 out of 3 for a Full English means that for the price paid the food was excellent and I would come again repeatedly. The Ickenham Cafe fits this description.

I ordered the all-day breakfast which comes with an egg, two bacon, a sausage, fried slice, hash browns, mushrooms, beans and toast (£9.95). I also had a tea (£2.25). In fact I ordered a strawberry milkshake as well, but that is out of the scope of the review. What I ordered was not EBS compliant, but I wasn’t in the mood for black pudding or bubble. I will come back to compliance later.

Full English

Before you criticise the picture, I asked for the bacon well-done and the egg to be solid. The toast was lightly buttered. The egg was on top of the fried slice (where it should be). Applying some brown sauce, I went in. The egg and slice were nice, although the slice was slightly soggy. The bacon was done well enough for me and next time I will order it as it comes. The hash browns were premade. When I’d finished everything, I was able to tip the beans onto two slices of toast. You will not go hungry if you eat this breakfast. At £12.20, it’s good value for money.

So it gets top marks, even if there are a few imperfections. It’s difficult to eat out for under £15.

The Ickenham Cafe has a “create your own breakfast” menu and it includes black pudding and bubble and squeak. So it’s possible to have a fully compliant English Breakfast Society breakfast here. If you desire, you can add chips, onion rings and burgers too. Or you can go off the full English menu and have something lighter, like Eggs Benedict. It has a lunch and dinner menu too.

I arrived between 0900 and 1000 on a Sunday morning. As I left, the cafe was nearly full and others were arriving. I will definitely be visiting again.
