I recently took a holiday on the Greek island of Zakynthos. The food is lovely; the weather is hot but not uncomfortable and the people are friendly. Having escaped the cold of England, it was ironic to hear that the English were suffering from a heat wave. If you believe the press, half of England has vaporised. It was still there when I got back…

A holiday means breaking diets and relaxing. We ate well whilst we were on the island. Lots of excess calories, dinners out and drinks. I needed a long walk to reset and burn off the damage. But I had an ulterior motive: I wanted a full English.

Greek English Breakfast

On Thursday 28th, I walked from the hotel in Porto Koukla to Laganas. Laganas is a party town by night, but a good place to hang out on the beach by day. We’d been to Brusco twice before my visit on the 28th and sunbathed there. The staff are incredibly friendly. You can get a bed on the beach there provided you buy €20 of food and drink. The water is shallow and safe for kids. One of our group did extremely well and tanned nicely whilst we were there. I looked like a used antique leather sofa by comparison.

It was time to try Brusco’s full English. It came with two rashers of bacon, two sausages, two eggs, mushrooms, tomato and beans. There’s no black pudding or fried bread, so it doesn’t meet the EBS standard. But it is very good indeed.

I didn’t ask for any changes, just the breakfast as it comes. The bacon was delicious, the eggs were cooked enough for me, but still a bit runny. The sausages were good quality. The tomato grilled well and the mushrooms were tasty. If I’d shut my eyes, I could have been in England. Everything came to the table hot.

I could not fault this breakfast, so it gets top marks. It costs €12.50 in a tourist area, so not bad value. I went back for more the next day.
