Full English

I’m in Uxbridge quite a lot these days. I use the Pure Gym there, get my haircut and get a tan. I’ve walked past this cafe a few times and I’ve been meaning to get some breakfast there. It’s hidden in the Arcade off Uxbridge High Street and also goes by the name “Granny’s Cafe”.

I was hoping to get pie and mash at Lawrence’s in nearby Pinner. But unfortunately, they are shut. Their owner is having an operation, and it’s taken them out of circulation. Having discovered their closed shop, I decided to go to Uxbridge and get a full breakfast.

A couple of weeks ago, I managed some eggs on toast in there, but their menu is much more extensive. It’s possible to order a breakfast compliant with the EBS’s definition. This time I went for Breakfast C which is egg, 2 bacon, 1 sausage, black pudding, fried slice and beans. I added bubble and squeak. It came with a slice of bread and butter.

I asked for my bacon to be crisped and my egg to be well cooked (as I always do). As I often tell people, I get a weird taste in my mouth from runny fried eggs.

Running through the ingredients, the egg was nice, the beans were good, the sausage was good too. Often the sausage lets a full English down. This one looked like a frozen sausage, but it tasted good. The fried slice was a bit soggy, but I coped. There were three pieces of black pudding. I could only manage one of them. The one I ate I enjoyed, which is unusual for me. The bubble and squeak was tasty. It was made with carrots and cabbage.

But I didn’t enjoy the bacon. My relationship with bacon can be a bit hit and miss. This bacon was quite salty and I didn’t like it. No doubt others would enjoy it. So, I’m going to remove 0.1 from the score just for this. I don’t like reducing scores, particularly when the people running the cafe are friendly and pleasant.

The cafe is exceedingly good value for money though. The breakfast was huge and only cost £9.90 with a cup of tea. And I remained full for the rest of the day. This is the reason I’ve kept the score high.
