HR Café
English Breakfast
Date of visit: 4th April 2026
Score: 2/3.
EBS compliant: yes.

I first visited the HR Café with a former colleague and his family. And I was very impressed. The service was great and the food was good generally. I’ve been several times since.
If you are following me on the Internet (and I don’t expect that you are…), you will know that I did a 46-day Lent fast. I ate one meal a day with no alcohol and I lost over 7kg. On High Saturday I broke my fast. I went to the gym in the morning and afterwards I went to HR Café for a breakfast. The café is next to Upminster Bridge tube station.
The café serves set breakfasts but you can make your own too. All the standard ingredients are there, which makes it English Breakfast Society compliant. I could not confirm if the ingredients were British or not.
Anyway, I settled with the Full Breakfast. This consists of egg, bacon, sausage, beans, a hash brown, mushrooms and a cup of tea. I added Bubble & Squeak. As usual I asked for my bacon to be crispy and well-done, along with the egg solid. (There is a reason for this, which I will go into one day.)
And it came. It didn’t touch the sides on the way down because for 46 days, I’d been on a strict diet. But it was not as good as I expected. The bacon was not as crisp as I would like. This is a matter of personal taste. The mushrooms were not particularly nice either.
Everything else was spot on. The sausage was nice. The bubble & squeak was good. The service was excellent. I ordered more toast with marmite and a milkshake to give my digestive system a reboot after 46 days of neglect. But unfortunately, I cannot give this more than a 2 out of 3. This bothers me because I’ve eaten here before and enjoyed it more. Never mind.
