Pie and Mash

For a very important reason, I find myself spending more time in West London. I end up spending Saturday mornings there, usually at the gym. Nearby, there are two P&M shops and after a gym session on cheat day, P&M is the perfect carb backload. I visited this shop in January. In April, I will visit the other P&M shop Lawrance’s in nearby Eastcote Village.

Hughes opened in 2022 according to a sign inside, but I have no further information about the shop. I should have asked whilst I was in there, but often the staff don’t know. The Facebook site simply says:

Traditional Pie Mash & Liquor, jellied ells and stewed eels also available. Eat in or take away.

Which is all true as we will see.

The shop is in a row of shops near to Ruislip Gardens tube station. You can park on the road nearby, but you will need to pay. Some caveats though: 1. the opening hours are limited 1130-1530 and 2. they only take cash. These are not uncommon features of P&M shops. I always carry cash when I go for pie and mash (I’m a poet as well). It’s necessary and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find a bank.

The interior has the usual benches and tiles. It’s clean inside. They offer takeaway - in fact whilst I was there, there were many takeaway customers. One took away a huge quantity of pies.

Pie flipped over

The pies are baked onsite and there are the usual condiments on the table - full marks for authenticity. The staff are very friendly. They brought my food to the table for me. I ordered the yardstick - 2&2 with liquor with a mug of tea. I ordered some eels in liquor as well.

The mash was scooped. Straight into business, I tipped a pie over and added chilli vinegar. Everything was delicious with top marks for taste. The parsley sauce was dense and green. If there was anything wrong, it was the size of the pies. The amount of filling looked a bit small. I could easily have managed a third pie. So, this is the only place where I will deduct a point from the score. Everything was cooked well and was hot at the table.

I did not enjoy the eels, but they are a matter of taste. They come with the bones, so you have work to do (or eat the bones of course). The meal came to £13.50 with an extra £6 for the eels. So far this is the most expensive place I’ve been to, but it is still affordable and in range.

All in all, Hughes is a nice P&M shop with friendly staff. Perhaps the pies could be a bit bigger, but this is my only complaint.
